Ancient time
There were some temples and shrines along the hillside as mountain worship was ver major religion in that time.
In medieval time
Having been as some battel field,Rokko mountains were devastated. Besides there were logging, landscaping, firing and so on so that the area became more damaged and ran to ruin.
In the Edo period
People started to enter the mountains to build some reservoirs in the valley. They went into the mountain in search of various living materials such as grass for cattle feed, thatched roofs, firewood for fuel, and clay walls. .. The steep river gave an idea of watermill to people. The watermills were used for squeezing rapeseed oil since the beginning of the period, and were eventually used for milling rice to develop the production of somen noodles and Japanese sake. The granites exposed on the hill were high-quality stone materials, and they became products which were widely known from the place of the big trading port.
Hot springs that had been springing along with an earth fault has also been used in the area and the plains for a long time. Wildfires caused by people entering the mountains were also said to be Rokko’s specialty, and often the large amount of forest was burned down. The mountains devastated in this way caused sediment to flow out every time heavy rain falls, and the sediment that flowed out piled up on the mountainside to form an alluvial fan, and a sandbar was formed at the mouth of the river. It is said that when viewed from the top of a ship that arrived in Kobe during the Meiji era, the reflection of the rough mountaintop of Rokko seemed to be covered with snow. In addition, the fact that there was a wasteland that looked like a desert to the north of the mountain again was a result of the history of such excessive mountain use.
You are going to visit some breweries and taste different kind of Japanese rice wine with a sake navigator.
